About the tour

Discover one of Rome’s hidden gems on a guided tour of the Basilica and archaeological site of San Clemente. Explore three underground levels and uncover over 2,000 years of history beneath the city streets.

Visit the beautiful 12th-century Basilica before descending to the remains of a forgotten 4th-century church and an ancient Mithraic temple with its original altar. Learn how these fascinating underground ruins were discovered in 1860 after a flood led an Irish Dominican priest and archaeologist to uncover the hidden levels below.

At the deepest level, see the underground spring that caused the discovery and explore the remains of ancient Roman homes, carefully excavated and remarkably preserved. A unique experience away from Rome’s more crowded attractions.

Best Tour Experience in Rome Exploring the Basilica of San Clementes Layers of History

We had an incredible experience touring the Basilica of San Clemente Our guide Mara was exceptionalextremely knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the site Her enthusiasm brought the history of the place to life making the tour both educational and engaging The highlight was exploring the three distinct layers of history from the 12thcentury basilica to the 4thcentury church below and finally the ancient Roman structures at the deepest level Each floor offered a fascinating glimpse into a different time period and Maras detailed explanations tied everything together beautifully I highly recommend this tour for history enthusiasts and anyone looking to uncover the rich layers of Romes past

Took this as our fist

Took this as our first tour of Rome with my wife and daughter 9 Ursus was our guide and really made the history come alive There was only 4 of us in our group and there was very few people at the entire site so it felt like we had our own personalized tour Very cool to go down through 3 layers of history and see incredible works of art up close and personal Highly recommend
