About the tour

Discover one of Rome’s hidden gems on a guided tour of the Basilica and archaeological site of San Clemente. Explore three underground levels and uncover over 2,000 years of history beneath the city streets.

Visit the beautiful 12th-century Basilica before descending to the remains of a forgotten 4th-century church and an ancient Mithraic temple with its original altar. Learn how these fascinating underground ruins were discovered in 1860 after a flood led an Irish Dominican priest and archaeologist to uncover the hidden levels below.

At the deepest level, see the underground spring that caused the discovery and explore the remains of ancient Roman homes, carefully excavated and remarkably preserved. A unique experience away from Rome’s more crowded attractions.

San Clemente

Eddy is a great guide Very knowledgeable Seeing the 3 levels of the historic town and church was amazing That in those times they could build on another church was outstanding My only complaint is with Viator I searched for catacombs and this came up Maybe our definitions are different but I wanted to see the burial catacombs Not here But the church is beautiful and Eddy explained the symbolism magnificently
